Oathly Privacy Policy
- Effective date: 20 October 2026
- Developer: Apollo Innovation
- Contact: innovationapollo@gmail.com
Oathly is an independent study app for the U.S. citizenship (naturalization) civics test. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to USCIS or any U.S. government agency.
Summary
- No account. Oathly never asks for your name, email address or immigration details.
- Your study progress stays on your device.
- The microphone is used only while you answer a question. Audio is never recorded or saved by Oathly.
- Ads are provided by Google AdMob. Where the law requires it, we ask for your consent first.
- Crash reports and basic usage statistics help us fix problems (Google Firebase).
1. Information stored on your device
Oathly stores the following only on your device, in the app's private storage:
- Your settings: state, explanation language, speech speed, theme, vibration and your interview date if you set one.
- Study progress: which questions you answered, correct and incorrect results, the review schedule, your daily streak and mock interview scores.
- For answers the app was unsure about ("Did you mean …?"), the text of what you said or typed, so the answer checker can be improved in future versions. This text never leaves your device.
We have no access to this information. Uninstalling the app or clearing its data deletes it.
2. Microphone and speech recognition
When you tap or hold the microphone, Oathly listens until you stop speaking and turns your speech into text so it can check your answer.
- Oathly asks your phone to recognize speech on the device whenever the device supports it.
- On some phones on-device recognition is not available. Then your phone's speech service (for example Google on Android or Apple on iOS) may process the audio on its servers to return the text, under that provider's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy and https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
- Audio is never recorded, saved or uploaded by Oathly itself.
- The microphone permission is optional. You can deny it and type your answers instead, and change it at any time in your phone's settings.
Reading questions aloud (text-to-speech) uses your phone's built-in voice and does not use the microphone.
3. Advertising (Google AdMob)
Oathly is free and supported by ads from Google AdMob: a banner on some study screens, an ad inside the Review Mistakes screen, a full-screen ad after some mock interview results or when you return to the app, and an optional video you can choose to watch to unlock an extra mock interview. Ads are never shown while a mock interview is in progress.
To show and measure ads, AdMob may collect:
- the device advertising identifier (Android advertising ID, or the iOS advertising identifier if you allow it), IP address and approximate location derived from it
- information about ad views and taps, device type and app usage
In the EEA, the UK, Switzerland and other regions where it is required, we use Google's User Messaging Platform to ask for your consent before ads use your data. You can change your choice at any time in Settings → Privacy choices (shown where required). If you do not consent, you may see non-personalized or limited ads.
How Google uses this information: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites
4. Crash reports and analytics (Google Firebase)
We use Firebase Crashlytics to receive crash reports, and Firebase Analytics to understand how features are used. Oathly logs these events itself: a mock interview was started (and its mode), a mock interview was finished (its mode, the number of correct and incorrect answers and whether it passed), and an extra interview was unlocked with a video ad. Firebase Analytics also records standard app events such as app opens and screen use.
These events never include your answers, transcripts or audio. Firebase may receive device information, the app version, an app-instance identifier and your IP address. Firebase privacy information: https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy
5. Updated officials data
Oathly receives the list of current officials (for example the President and each state's senators and governor) through Google Firebase Remote Config, at most about twice a day and when we publish an update. Firebase receives your IP address and an app-instance identifier to deliver it. No study data is sent.
6. Notifications
Oathly does not send notifications.
7. Children
Oathly is made for adults preparing for the naturalization interview and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
8. Sharing and selling
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with the service providers described above (Google AdMob, Google Firebase and your phone's speech service), which process it to provide their services.
9. Your choices and rights
- Deny or revoke the microphone permission at any time. You can always type your answers.
- Change your ad consent in Settings → Privacy choices (where required).
- Reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone's settings.
- Delete all app data by clearing the app's storage or uninstalling it.
- Email innovationapollo@gmail.com for questions or data requests (for example under the GDPR). Because Oathly has no accounts, we hold no data that identifies you; data held by Google can be managed through Google's own tools.
10. Changes
We may update this policy. The effective date at the top shows the latest version. Questions: innovationapollo@gmail.com
